I interact with people often, and I can sometimes pick a sense of intimidation they feel about transitioning into the tech career path.
If you feel this way, you are not strange. I know a few people who think this way, and the solution is to get the proper knowledge.
In this post, I will help you see five reasons why you feel that way and why you should also stop feeling that way. These reasons will also help you not approach the tech career in so much hurry.
So, let’s dive right in.
“I didn’t study computer science or any tech-related course at the university.”
There are a lot of young men and women in the tech field with backgrounds in Economics, foreign languages, indigenous language, theatre arts, botany, zoology, sociology, psychology, etc., and “your non-related course.”
You don’t have to study a computer science-related course before starting a tech career, so don’t be intimidated.
I have an assignment for you, research 40 Africans on LinkedIn who are doing well in tech and find out what their course of study was in the university. What you find out will relieve you of that intimidation.
“I am starting late; all my friends have already been in tech years before me.”
One of the people I respect a lot once said, “When you wake up is your morning.” There are many things other people have started before you; tech will not be the first. You are not at a disadvantage starting now.
There is so much room to accommodate you and the people who will come ten years later. Those who have gone ahead of you are for your advantage because they can help you on the journey, so calm down and view it from a positive perspective.
“Will I ever become an expert? The learning process is too slow for me.”
Yes, you will become an expert if you keep at it. I can imagine that you have been on one video tutorial or course for over one month, and you are wondering how it will come together as a career, or maybe you have been applying for jobs and internships, and you have not gotten any.
The process of learning refines everyone, even in the tech field.
All these slow processes are part of the journey. I love this quote by Robin Sharma “Change is hardest at the beginning, messiest in the middle, and best at the end.”
Do you see now? The start of the journey is not just slow for you; it’s slow for every other person. Once you master it, you will be glad you submitted to the process.
“My life is so full. Can I have time to learn anything in tech?”
Yes, you can. Life can be overwhelming with different demands from your family, friends, job, and society. We give our time to the things that are of priority to us. You don’t have time for item B because you have given your time to item A, which is more important.
You are intimidated because you are looking to have 5 hrs daily for a course while your current schedule can only give you the luxury of 45 mins daily. It’s not necessarily in the bulk of time but in your consistency till you can have time to do more.
“I want to know everything now.”
No, you can’t know everything now. You have not valued the little you have learned because you want to learn everything now. Like I said above, there is a process in life, and there is a process to learning itself.
Give yourself the time to learn, grow and evolve into the expert of your dream. Nobody became an expert in a day, every expert you see today was once a beginner. Don’t rush yourself; take things in small bites, and you will be surprised at what you can achieve in a few years.
In conclusion, it’s not unusual for you to feel intimidated. You need to align yourself with these five truths above to make it easier on yourself as you start and continue this journey.
