Don’t Just Jump Into Tech; Plan It!

I can imagine you saying, “ I don’t even know how to get into tech; how can I plan it?”

You don’t need to know everything to make a plan. You need to plan around what you know. How do I mean? There is a high tendency to get overwhelmed by the numerous information or resources that can educate you on the journey, but a plan helps you stay focused on your goal.

A person can decide to learn web development, and the next minute, they find themselves enrolling for a course on mobile development. This is why planning is essential for both beginners and veterans. As a beginner, planning your transition journey will do you a lot of good.

This post will help you identify some experiences you might encounter when you don’t plan your tech transition and how planning can help you get results on the journey. If you are considering going into tech, you are reading this at the best time.

A Lot of People Jump Into Tech

Tech is the new oil, so everybody is going in to get their quota!

The reality is that many people are going into tech and struggling on the journey because the need for tech talents has skyrocketed across the world.

These people did not mean to struggle, but there are a lot of things you need to know outside the technical competence you will learn in courses. One of the things you need to know is to have a short plan per time and stick to it.

Going on a path you have never treaded before is definitely not going to be easy, and there will be a lot of almost valid excuses to push you to stop or give up, but a plan can help you stay on the cause.

Why Do You Need To Plan?

Planning your transition into the tech career is essential. Here are three key reasons why planning is important.

  1. To manage and avoid overwhelm - The truth is that you are new on the journey, and overwhelm can be sometimes inevitable, but it can be managed. Every event and course will pop up as suggestions in your browser, and if you do not have a plan, you can easily jump on every information you see and get overwhelmed.

  2. To avoid giving up - When you get overwhelmed, you will start considering the option of ending the transition journey in no time. There are a lot of factors that can help you with this, and planning is one of them.

  3. To get results - A lot of thoughtfulness goes into planning. Because of this thoughtfulness, you can be sure of a plan that has the potential to deliver the outcome you desire. A person who plans to achieve a goal has a higher probability of achieving the goal than a person who doesn’t.

I have emphasized the need to plan and issues that can be encountered without a plan, so what’s a plan, and how can you plan your transition journey?

A plan is a thorough proposal of how you can achieve a goal. A plan keeps your goal alive.

Steps To Creating Your Tech Transition Plan

What Do You Want?

Your desire or goal is the anchor of your plan. If a person’s goal is to be a Nigerian footballer in 5 years, his plan will be around that. Your goal might be to learn product design and design a product from start to finish in 6 months or to understand how mobile development works and complete a small mobile project in 1 year.

The key thing here is to ensure that you can articulate your goal and that your goal is SMART:

S- Specific

M- Measurable

A- Achievable

R- Relevant

T - Timebound

If you are a newbie, my candid advice is that you start with short-term goals because you need the motivation of your progress earlier in the journey.

How Can You Get What You Want?

Now that you have articulated your goal, you must research how to bring it to life. Two things can happen in the process of your research:

  1. You might need to rewrite your goal because you didn’t know much about it before you crafted it and don’t think it’s worth pursuing anymore.

  2. You might need to refine your goal. You might have gotten enhanced knowledge to help refine your goal in the research process. With more knowledge and information comes more direction.

Do not take forever to research the “how” because you might just find yourself procrastinating from starting at all. Your sources during research can be people who have gone ahead of you in that field, books, blog posts, videos, and many more.

Do You Have It Written Down?

Please write down your goal and execution plan and refer to it within the time of execution. Many people have their plans in their heads which is not the best. Put your plan down on paper or in an e-format and refer to it occasionally.

In conclusion, you have learned how to minimize the struggles of transitioning into tech, work on it and see it work for you.

One last piece of advice, if you are a newbie, I don’t advise you to take a course for more than one month because you are still in the exploratory phase.
