This piece aims to stop people from being pressured by the success of others, but rather to acknowledge their work, celebrate them and be motivated by it.
We live in a world where society has taught us to compete with other individuals. We downplay, talk poorly or look down on the successes of others and explain it away.
Let me ask you this question, do you want people to do that to you?
We agree we all have to compete for survival, but we have to adopt a higher mindset that there is enough to go around only if we can see and believe it.
The mindset of competition is rooted in the scarcity mindset. It believes that others must be doing bad for you to do well and that is not correct at all. You can do well while others are doing well. Competing with others will not give you peace in any way.
The myth of talking others down
We don’t genuinely get better when others are not doing well. It is a delusion we have been made to believe. The world is a better place when we all do well. Let’s consider the scenario of an ocean, we can never empty an ocean no matter how hard we try.
I learnt about the crab mentality some years ago and I will like to share my thoughts about it with you.
Crab mentality is also known as the crab-bucket effect where crabs are in a bucket or enclosure all trying to escape. If one tries to escape above the other, all its effort is undermined by the other group and they pull it back to join them. This is commonly associated with the phrase “If I can’t have it, neither can you”.
So, they either leave the bucket together or no one leaves. This is a character that is displayed when we are not genuinely happy for others and we wish we should have their success instead of them. It does not do anyone any good.
If you have believed up until now that you can only do well when others don’t, this is the part where you have to bid that lie farewell and embrace a higher truth. Don’t talk others down when they do well, don’t wish for something bad to happen to them instead be happy for them.
Talking others down blinds you from seeing the light in the world because your perception is impaired with negativity. This will impact how you perceive your light as well. I believe you now understand this well.
Be Happy For Others
Once you believe that there is enough in the world to go round, it will be easier for you to be happy for others. There is a time for everyone to shine, don’t be discouraged by a person’s light rather you should be happy for them and also that yours will shine too.
Let’s paint a scenario of two friends (Mr. A and Mr. B) who have the same occupation. Mr. A won a contract with a multinational which is like a great feat in their occupation.
How will Mr. B react? 1. Mr. B can react with anger and jealousy. This can lead him to even do something negative to Mr. A. 2. Mr. B can also let him know that he would have loved to be in his shoes and he is happy for him because he deserves it as well.
The truth is that Mr. B will always get another opportunity.
As I end this piece, you need to know that your existing mindset might not be changed at the snap of a finger, it will change gradually as you intentionally retrain your mind.
If you find it to be true that you talk down on other people’s success and you wish for something bad to happen for them then you should immediately accept and correct it gradually till it becomes a part of you to be happy for others as well as for yourself.
This will help you sustain relationships and also attract abundance in the world. If you see scarcity, you attract scarcity, if you see abundance, you attract abundance.
